Bedside blood glucose monitoring in hospitals.

چکیده

The modern management of hospitalized patients with diabetes includes capillary blood glucose determinations at the bedside. This measure is analogous to an additional “vital sign” for people with diabetes. The rapidity with which results can be obtained, and therapeutic decisions made, can improve management and conceivably shorten hospital stays. Replacing venipunctures with capillary blood glucose tests enhances patient comfort. Bedside glucose determinations can be performed by adequately trained personnel. Use of bedside blood glucose monitoring requires 1) clear administrative responsibility for the procedure, 2) a well-defined policy/ procedure manual, 3) a training program for those personnel doing the testing, 4) quality control procedures, and 5) regularly scheduled equipment maintenance. The frequency of measurement needs to be individualized. The essential elements of a bedside glucose monitoring program have been outlined in a published guideline (1).

Antenatal and Neonatal Endocrinology

Background: Neonatal hypoglycemia can lead to devastating consequences. Thus, constant, accurate and safe glucose monitoring is imperative in neonatal care. However, point-of-care (POC) devices for glucose testing currently used for neonates were originally designed for adults and do not address issues specific to neonates. Methods: This review addresses currently available monitoring options a...

Comparison between arterial and capillary blood glucose monitoring in patients with shock.

BACKGROUND The accuracy of bedside glucometry using capillary blood is contentious in patients admitted to intensive care units. We aimed to compare the accuracy of capillary bedside glucometry with arterial samples in critically ill patients with shock through a prospective case-control study. METHODS Study group consisted of 100 patients with shock on vasopressor support and control group h...

Clinical Use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Pediatrics

The first reported clinical use of a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system in children was by CossBuet al. in 1999. They investigated a bedside VIA 1-01G Blood Chemistry monitor for measuring glucose in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The monitor was programmed to draw venous blood, analyze, and record blood glucose samples automatically at predetermined intervals. This system wa...
